Pollen might look harmless, but for millions of people, it’s the invisible troublemaker behind hayfever—also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis. But what exactly is pollen, and why does it turn a lovely spring day into a sneezing marathon?🌾 What Is Pollen, Anyway?Pollen is a fine, powdery substance released by plants to help them reproduce. While that’s great news for flowers and trees, it’s not so great for your sinuses. When pollen particles are carried through the air and inhaled, they can trigger allergic reactions—especially in those with sensitive immune systems.Common symptoms of hayfever include:

  • Sneezing fits

  • Itchy or watery eyes

  • Nasal congestion

  • A runny nose

  • Fatigue or brain fog (yes, really!)

  • 🌳 Meet the Pollen TypesDifferent plants release pollen at different times of the year, which is why hayfever symptoms can flare up in spring, summer, or even autumn. Here’s a quick guide to the main pollen types to watch out for:
  • 🌳 Tree Pollen – Active in early spring. Trees like birch, oak, and hazel are common culprits.🌱 Grass Pollen – The most widespread trigger, peaking in late spring to early summer.🌿 Weed Pollen – Tends to show up in late summer and autumn, with plants like nettle and ragweed doing the damage.

  • 🕒 Why Timing MattersEach type of pollen has its own season, which is why some people suffer in March, others in June, and some all the way into September. Knowing which pollen is active in your area can help you better prepare, medicate, or avoid exposure.

If you suffer from Hayfever and you are visiting the Isle of Lewis please top up before you come, there are chemists in Stornoway but not elsewhere. Here is one I recommend and use myself!
