In what feels like a lifetime ago, I was looking for something more than just sitting in front of the TV and becoming a vegetable. Believe that if you may. When a friend said “If you are bored, why not become a first aider” I thought about it and promptly joined “The British Red Cross”, I became a team leader, for first aid events, and enjoyed a couple of hundred hours of volunteer service in the first few months. My supervisor mentioned that they needed communications for an event and had nobody trained in how to operate the radios. That again got me thinking. If nobody is qualified, what do I need to do to become Qualified, Of course being an Overthinker, I researched this and reached out to RAYNET, The East Ayrshire Controller and I had a meeting and he introduced me to the local radio club.
Within Weeks I had become a Licenced Radio Amateur (M3VQE), I became the defacto “Goto Radio Guy” for the Red Cross regional team, and Crisis Communications Manager for Lancashire. We moved, and my British Red Cross records got lost. I continued however with the Amateur Radio and passed my intermediate licence becoming 2EoDMZ and a year later M0ZIF.
On Moving to Scotland, Ayrshire to be more specific, I joined Kilmarnock and Loudoun ARC, and became one of the trainers there, I was instrumental in restarting The Scottish Amateur Radio Convention, But that would not have happened without the support of a select few but dedicated individuals and of course the amateur community at large.
I later became Regional Manager for Region One for the RSGB. Due to outside work commitments, I had to resign from that position and my Amateur Radio dried up for a number of years.
Hi I am Marcus, MM0ZIF, a licenced Radio Amateur, Doctor of Musicology, amateur weather enthusiast. I over the years have been a Amateur Radio Tutor, Examiner, and a Regional Manager for the Radio Society of Great Britain.
