Review: RT-Systems QYT KT-8900D Programming software.

The initial problem was this: CHIRP failed to detect the comport of the radio, QYT’s own software hates windows 11 Pro 64bit. I have 2 QYT KT-8900D radios, which I feel are excellent and always get good signal reports. So I wasn’t going to lose them to dodgy software.

So I googled solutions and I hate to say paid $25 for this, hoping it would solve my issues. Oh I could have written something to do this, however time at the moment of writing this is a big issue. Maybe I will do that later.

Introduction

The RT Systems RPS-8900D programming software is a comprehensive tool designed specifically for the QYT KT-8900D radio, offering users a seamless way to manage memory channels and customize various menu settings from their PC. This software is part of RT Systems’ lineup, known for its ease of use and robust features, making it an essential companion for amateur radio enthusiasts.

Key Features

  • Memory Management: The software allows for the management of up to 200 memory channels, along with two VFO channels. It provides a spreadsheet layout with point-and-click options, making it easy to edit and organize channel information. Users can quickly add, delete, or modify channels as needed, ensuring that their radio is always up-to-date with the latest frequencies.
  • Customization: Users can customize a wide range of settings, including DTMF, 2Tone, and 5Tone options. The software also supports common menu features like TX Power, Scan Add, and Optional Signaling. This level of customization allows users to tailor their radio settings to meet specific operational needs, whether for personal use or in a group setting.
  • Integration with External Data Sources: The RPS-8900D integrates with services like Radio Reference, Repeater Book, and RFinder, allowing users to easily find and program repeater frequencies for their location or travel routes. This integration saves time and ensures that users have access to the most current and accurate frequency data.
  • User Interface: The interface is intuitive, with features like copy and paste of memory channel information between files, making it efficient to set up new configurations. Users can also import and export data, which is particularly useful for sharing settings with other team members or for backing up configurations.

Performance and Compatibility

The software is compatible with Windows 8/8.1, 10 (32 or 64 Bit), and Windows 11, requiring a USB-70 cable for connection to the radio although the one with the radio does indeed work! RT Systems emphasizes that the software is designed to work with the manufacturer’s firmware, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing the risk of compatibility issues.

User Experience

One of the standout features of the RPS-8900D software is its ease of use. Even users without extensive programming experience can quickly navigate the interface and start customizing their radio settings. The software also includes comprehensive documentation and support resources, which are invaluable for troubleshooting or learning more about advanced features.

Conclusion

The RT Systems RPS-8900D software is a valuable tool for anyone using the QYT KT-8900D radio. It offers a user-friendly interface, robust features, and seamless integration with external data sources. While it is specifically designed for the KT-8900D, it showcases RT Systems’ commitment to providing high-quality programming solutions for amateur radio enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or just starting out, this software can help you get the most out of your radio.

The one thing that got me with this is that all of the External Data Sources, not one of them allow you to search specific regional repeaters in the UK, so when I have some time, I am going to write that code!
