The Art of Crafting Effective Job Descriptions

I like many others look to LinkedIn as a source of jobs available, sometimes there are amazing job descriptions, and sometimes there are ones like the following, that make me laugh and cry at the same time first the post, then the analysis.

“Labourer. Job description: Salary: £13/Yr – £14/Yr” – Yes that is exactly the job as was posted!

What does this say to us as job seekers, or even employers scoping out the market? Firstly the person/company advertising doesn’t actually care about their work, or the work of the employee that will take this post. No job description to me says “DOGSBODY” the salary, obviously they couldn’t even be bothered to make sure it was £13 to £14 an hour, or at least we hope they are paying! So let us have a look at the importance of writing a good job description.

The Importance of Descriptive Job Descriptions

Attracting the Right Candidates

A well-written job description is like a cosmic beacon—it attracts the right talent. Here’s why descriptive job descriptions matter:

Clarity: Candidates need to understand what the role entails. A concise and Compelling sets potential employees’ expectations for the work environment, and also filters out any mismatched applicants.

Skills and Responsibilities: Descriptive job descriptions outline specific skills required and responsibilities. The better the description the better the quality of the candidate.

First Impressions: A stellar job description creates a positive first impression. It’s your chance to showcase your organization’s culture and values.

Dynamic Descriptions for Modern Roles

Traditional job descriptions are like ancient scrolls—static and often outdated. But in today’s dynamic work environment, we need something more agile:

Outcome-Based Approach: Instead of rigid prescriptions, focus on outcomes. Describe what success looks like for the role.

Skills and Teams: Highlight essential skills and emphasize collaboration.

Fluidity: As technologies evolve, so do roles. Keep descriptions fluid, like a comet’s trajectory. Adapt as needed to match the cosmic currents of change.
