If you ever notice a checkerboard or grid-like pattern on the ocean\u2019s surface-known as square waves or a cross sea-it\u2019s more than just a striking visual phenomenon. Square waves form when two different wave systems, generated by winds from separate weather events, intersect at nearly right angles. This creates a crisscross pattern that can be seen from above or from high vantage points along the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst square waves may appear mesmerizing, they are associated with hazardous conditions. The intersecting wave systems create unpredictable and powerful currents, including rip currents, which can pose serious dangers to swimmers, surfers, and small boats. These currents may pull individuals in multiple directions, making escape difficult and increasing the risk of being swept out to sea. If you spot square waves forming, it\u2019s best to stay out of the water. Even experienced swimmers and boaters can find it challenging to navigate these unpredictable currents, and maritime accidents have been linked to cross sea conditions. Enjoy the view from a safe distance, but avoid entering the water until conditions return to normal<\/p>\n\n\n\n
