With the advent of AI-powered resume screening tools, job seekers need to adapt their strategies to ensure their applications make it past these digital gatekeepers. However, even the most sophisticated AI tools can fall short if not properly configured by HR staff. Let’s explore why multiple resume versions are necessary and how misconfiguration can impact the hiring process.

The Rise of AI in Resume Screening

Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized the way companies handle the initial stages of recruitment. AI-powered resume screening tools can quickly analyze thousands of applications, matching candidates’ qualifications with job requirements. This technology promises to save time and reduce bias in the hiring process. However, it also presents new challenges for job seekers.

Why You Need Multiple Resume Versions

1. Tailoring for Specific Roles

Different positions require different skills and experiences. By maintaining multiple versions of your resume, you can highlight the most relevant aspects of your background for each job application. For example:

Full Resume: A comprehensive document detailing your entire professional history. These are often lengthy documents that traditionally needed a filing cabinet to move!

Shortened Resume: A concise version focusing on your most relevant experiences.

Targeted Resume: A highly customized version tailored to a specific job description.

Please also remember AI has a tendency to mess things up, in spectacular ways (AI Dreams). Depending on the Question it may go off on a real tangent, or down a rabbit hole you didn’t see. One thing you need to be aware of and do is READ the output of any AI prompt, check it, spell check it, grammar check it and re-read it. Grammarly is a useful tool here, but there are others too but a basic understanding of the language your writing in is always best!

2. Keyword Optimization

AI screening tools often rely on keyword matching to identify suitable candidates. By creating multiple versions, you can incorporate relevant keywords from different job descriptions, increasing your chances of passing the initial screening.

3. Adapting to Different ATS Systems

Various companies use different Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), each with its own quirks. Having multiple resume formats allows you to adapt to these systems, ensuring your information is parsed correctly.

The Human Factor: When HR Configuration Goes Wrong

While AI tools can be powerful, they are only as effective as the humans configuring them. A poorly set up screening process can lead to several issues:

1. Overlooking Qualified Candidates

If HR staff don’t properly define the job requirements or set appropriate screening criteria, the AI may filter out highly qualified candidates. For instance, if a role requires “5 years of experience” but the system is set to only accept “6+ years,” it could miss out on excellent candidates with 5 years of highly relevant experience.

2. Over-Reliance on Keywords

Some HR professionals might over-emphasize certain keywords, leading to a situation where candidates who “keyword stuff” their resumes get through, while more qualified candidates are overlooked.

3. Failure to Recognize Transferable Skills

AI systems may struggle to identify transferable skills if not properly configured. This can be particularly problematic for career changers or those with non-traditional backgrounds.

4. Bias Reinforcement

If the AI is trained on biased historical data or the job requirements are not carefully crafted, it may perpetuate existing biases in hiring, defeating one of the primary purposes of using AI in recruitment.

Tips for Job Seekers

Customize Your Resume: Tailor your resume for each application, incorporating relevant keywords from the job description.

Use Clear Formatting: Stick to standard resume formats that are easily readable by both AI and humans.

Quantify Achievements: Use specific metrics and numbers to highlight your accomplishments, as AI tools often look for quantifiable data.

Keep It Relevant: Focus on skills and experiences most pertinent to the job you’re applying for.

Be Prepared for Human Review: Remember that your resume should ultimately impress a human reader, so don’t sacrifice readability for the sake of AI optimization.

While AI has transformed the recruitment landscape, it’s not infallible. Job seekers need to be savvy in crafting multiple resume versions to navigate these digital hurdles. Simultaneously, HR professionals must ensure they’re configuring these tools correctly to avoid missing out on top talent. By understanding both the capabilities and limitations of AI in recruitment, candidates can better position themselves for success in their job search.

Do not add a photo!

Generally, you should not include a photo in your resume, especially if you’re applying for jobs in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Here’s why:

Reasons to Avoid Including a Photo

Potential for Discrimination: Employers may reject applications with photos to avoid accusations of bias based on appearance, race, age, or gender.

Professionalism: In many industries, including a photo is considered unprofessional and may make your resume stand out for the wrong reasons.

Limited Space: A photo takes up valuable real estate on your resume that could be used to highlight your skills and experiences.

ATS Compatibility: Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that may have difficulty processing resumes with photos.

Companies using automated HR, could or can, use facial recognition to find out many other things about you. Like your social media profiles, if you were at a protest, a gala or the likes. Be very careful.

Job Hunting – The Full time job!

The job application process itself is taking longer for candidates:

On average, it takes about 162 seconds (over 2.5 minutes) to apply for a single job, dependent on the role, however the more technical the longer it takes.

Job seekers are spending an average of 6.5 hours per week on their job search, for basic jobs, IT and Specialist roles can become a full time career in their own right.

Millennials are expected to spend 46 months of their lives applying for jobs, which is 21 months more than Baby Boomers.

More Applications Required

Candidates need to submit more applications to secure a position:

The average job seeker needs to make 27 applications to land just 1 job interview.

Job seekers are sending out 40% more applications than they did last year at this time.

Some studies suggest candidates need to submit between 100-200 applications throughout their job search, with some going as high as 400.

Longer Hiring Process

The overall hiring process has extended:

The average time to hire has increased from 40 days in 2019 to 44 days in 2023.

It takes an average of 3-6 months from start to finish to get a job.

Some data suggests it can take up to 247 days (about 8 months) for job seekers to land a job in 2024-5.

Reasons for Increased Time and Effort

Several factors contribute to the lengthening job search process:

Increased use of AI and automated screening tools by employers.

More involved hiring processes, including multiple rounds of interviews, because AI is not human and adds extra levels of complexity.

Higher competition for positions, especially in certain industries.

The prevalence of “ghost jobs” and scams that waste applicants’ time.

The listing of many dubious jobs, that are technically illegal, posting fake reviews and getting paid only in Digital coin, these often sell their jobs as “make £5,000 a week working from home, all you need is a Cellphone”

There is also the issue of the “Gig Economy” Jobs like “Teach English from home” where they are not providing a job they are selling their services to promote you! So you sign up, pay money, pay more money, get a client, pay more money and the circle continues.

Given these factors, it’s fair to say that for many people, conducting a thorough job search has indeed become akin to a full-time job in terms of the time and effort required. Job seekers need to be prepared for a potentially lengthy process and should approach their search with patience, persistence, and a strategic mindset.

How to land the perfect job?

That is the Question but one thing is for sure, use LinkedIn, and remember “You are the Brand” make your brand, and sell yourself as that brand. Do not treat it like other social media platforms. I would even advise not including links to your private Social Media ever. Keep them Private! No employer needs to ever see them. After all seeing you sat by a pool with a cocktail, yes perfectly innocent, but to an employer that sends the idea that you like the finer things in life. Pictures of you and your children likewise make people think, “Oh Johnny has flu again, more time off work”

So Keep Work and Private life Very Separate!

I think the best way to find jobs these days is actual Physical Networking. The art of going and talking to people! AI tools can help but you ask the same question to ten models and you will get ten answers, if you are lucky sometimes many more. AI still has a long way to go.

To Conclude:

Job hunting is now more time consuming than ever, and just appearing in the top 10 candidates is not enough to even get you a face to face interview. Perseverance and patience should be added to your skill-set as it is something that you have learned a lot about whilst searching for jobs.

I do hope this article has helped you in some ways. Good luck job hunting!

The post The Horrors of Applying for any job in 2025! appeared first on HavensWell.

In today’s competitive job market, crafting an effective resume has become more crucial than ever.
